The claustrophobic bunker scenes are especially vivid, making the girls’ desperation and fight for survival feel heartbreakingly real.
While the mystery kept me turning the pages, it was the emotional depth that made this novel stand out. Themes of grief, trauma, survival and the lasting impact of loss give the story real heart and Von’s determination to uncover the truth adds genuine emotional weight to every revelation.
The Australian setting is a standout feature. Cyclone Tracy is far more than historical context, it becomes an integral part of the story, amplifying the tension and grounding the mystery in a tragic chapter of Australia’s history. The atmosphere is wonderfully immersive, from the oppressive heat of the outback to the ever-present feeling that something sinister lies hidden beneath the surface.
The twists are clever and satisfyingly earned, leading to a finale that answers the central questions while leaving a lingering emotional impact long after the final page.
