Book Review: Sweet Caroline by Hannah Brixton

Caroline is an art gallery event planner who wants to start living her life authentically, instead of what’s best for her father’s political career.

Miles is in recovery, approaching one year of sobriety and is still carrying a lot of guilt over things that happened in the past while also grieving the loss of his parents.

Caroline and Miles meet at the gym where an innocent picture of them is taken out of context. When Caroline’s father reminds her of his campaign she persuades Miles to fake date until the election is over—he cannot risk his sobriety and is not ready for a relationship so it can only be a temporary arrangement.

Once I started reading Sweet Caroline I couldn’t stop. It was emotional and intelligent with likeable well developed characters that drew me into their world. It was everything!!

Let me tell you about Chapter 23!! It broke me. In a soul destroying, heart wrenching, can’t stop crying kind of way, which continued for several more chapters!

I adore Miles! I didn’t expect to like him so much but I warmed to him straight away. His inner monologue was hilarious and his growth throughout the book was raw and heart wrenching. It might be called Sweet Caroline but this is 100 percent Miles’ book!

I finished this book at 1:30am, a blubbering mess, and then laid awake for another hour thinking about the book.

Without a doubt this is one of my favourite reads of the year!

Here’s the synopsis

He’s trying to rein it in. She needs to let loose.

Caroline Brennan is stuck. Living in the shadow of her controlling father’s political career, she’s perfected being a people pleaser. When an ill-timed photo thrusts her headfirst into a fake relationship with a handsome stranger, their unexpected connection shakes up everything stagnant in her life. On a mission to explore what she likes, she soon discovers he’s exactly what she needs.

Miles Sharpe is finally proud of who he sees in the mirror. After more than a decade battling grief and addiction, he’s nearly a year sober—and determined to stay that way. But when everything he’s worked for is threatened, Miles becomes entangled with Caroline, both in front of the cameras and behind closed doors. If only prioritizing sobriety didn’t mean walking away from the woman who’s breathed life into his limited little world.

Fighting feelings that are anything but fake, Miles and Caroline have a choice: shed what’s shackling them to their pasts or let fear rip them apart.
